Production

In late 2018, VH1 decided to part ways with Eastern TV, the production company behind the series, and opened the door for new pitches to steer the show in a fresh direction. Filming for the sixth season of Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood kicked off in March 2019, with Big Fish Entertainment stepping in as the new production company. The network confirmed the season’s return on July 8, 2019, with a premiere date of August 5, 2019, and a teaser that brought back Apryl Jones and Lil’ Fizz to the main cast.

Fresh faces included Yo-Yo, rapper Micky Munday, J-Boog, Brittany B., and Tricia Ana, who is Akon’s wife. Brooke Valentine opted out after giving birth, choosing to take a break from the show. Moniece Slaughter returned in a supporting role but announced on social media that this would be her last season. Teairra Marí and Nikki Mudarris also came back later in the season as supporting cast.

VH1 rolled out a series of “meet the cast” promos starting July 17, 2019, followed by an extended teaser on July 23 and a five-minute super-trailer on July 29. This season marked a major shift for the franchise, ditching its usual cinematic look and high-budget feel for a style similar to Big Fish’s other VH1 shows like Black Ink Crew. The premiere skipped the opening credits and revamped the confessional scenes, swapping the green screen for a blue backdrop and occasionally having cast members share the space.

Viewer reactions were mixed to negative, with former star Hazel-E tweeting that the show had gone “from #Hollywood to the hood.” The premiere drew the lowest ratings in the show’s history, falling below 2 million viewers for the first time. Later episodes reinstated the opening credits and returned the confessionals to their original green screen setup.
