The Chiefs posted an 11–2–1 record during the regular season and defeated the Buffalo Bills 31–7 in the AFL Championship Game. The first half was competitive, with the Chiefs outgaining the Packers 181–164 yards and trailing 14–10 at halftime. However, a third-quarter interception by Packers safety Willie Wood led to 21 unanswered points. The Chiefs' offense was led by quarterback Len Dawson, the top-rated passer in the AFL, and wide receiver Otis Taylor. The defense featured All-AFL players Jerry Mays, Buck Buchanan, and linebacker Bobby Bell, along with safeties Johnny Robinson and Bobby Hunt, who each recorded 10 interceptions.
