Haley was hired as head coach on February 6, 2009, after the Chiefs fired Herm Edwards. In his first season, the Chiefs went 4–12. In his second season, the Chiefs won the AFC West for the first time since 2003, finishing with a division title. They lost in the Wild Card round to the Baltimore Ravens 30–7. In 2011, despite a 0–3 start, Haley led the Chiefs to a four-game winning streak and first place in the AFC West by midseason, but the team did not win the division that year.
