Caine's Redemption Duel

Honor binds them tighter than the blood on their blades.

Caine's Redemption Duel is the pistol duel at sunrise at Sacré-Cœur in Paris between John Wick and Caine at the climax of John Wick: Chapter 4. John challenges the Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont under an old High Table tradition that would free him from his obligations to the High Table if he won, and the Marquis chooses a reluctant Caine to fight as his proxy.

Quick Facts

Location
Sacré-Cœur, Paris

Lore & Background

The duel itself serves as a metaphor for the burden of their profession. The Marquis had forced Caine, a blind, retired High Table assassin and John's old friend, to hunt John by threatening to murder his daughter. John and Caine wound each other through two rounds, and in the third Caine seriously wounds John; the Marquis then demands to swap places with Caine to deliver the coup de grâce. Winston reveals that John had not fired his third bullet, and John executes the Marquis with a headshot, ending the duel.

Reader's Guide

To delay John, the Marquis sets a bounty on him, and Caine, the Tracker Mr. Nobody and his dog help John fight off dozens of assassins on the Rue Foyatier so that they reach the summit on time. After the Marquis's death, the Harbinger grants John and Caine, as well as Caine's daughter, their freedom from the High Table. In the final scene Caine returns to Paris to reunite with his daughter, but is approached by a vengeful, knife-wielding Akira.
