Lore & Background
A marker is a medallion symbolizing a blood oath. Santino had helped John complete the 'impossible task' that allowed him to retire and marry Helen, and John owed him a marker in return. Years later, Santino calls in this debt to force John out of retirement. The request is the assassination of Santino's own sister, Gianna, so that Santino can claim her seat at the High Table. The betrayal lies not just in the coercion, but in the intent behind it. Once John has fulfilled his obligation, Santino's bodyguard Ares turns on him to tie up loose ends on Santino's behalf. He views Wick as a liability that must be eliminated once his utility is exhausted. This violation of the Marker's spirit—using it to create an execution rather than a transaction—ignites a firestorm of vengeance.
Reader's Guide
The conflict begins when Santino visits John at home to call in the marker; when John refuses, Santino destroys his house with a grenade launcher. Bound by the ancient code of honor, John has no choice but to accept the assignment. In Rome, John finds Gianna in her dressing room during her coronation; she chooses to slit her wrists, and he shoots her to end her suffering. Leaving the site, he is attacked by Gianna's bodyguard Cassian and is then double-crossed in the catacombs by Ares, Santino's mute bodyguard.
Back in New York, Santino opens a contract on John, ostensibly to avenge his sister's death. With a pistol from the Bowery King, John attacks Santino's gala at an art museum and kills his subordinates, including Ares. Santino escapes to the Continental, boasting that he can stay in its sanctuary indefinitely, but John executes him in the Continental lounge. For conducting business on Continental grounds John is declared excommunicado, and the Camorra doubles the bounty on his head.
