Declaration of Excommunicado Status
The ultimate underworld sentence: no help, no mercy, only death.
Excommunicado is the ultimate sanction within the John Wick underworld, representing a state of total social and professional death for an assassin. Declared under the High Table's rules, the status terminates a person's privileges and access to the Continental and its underworld services. It effectively places a global bounty on their life, turning every other operative into a potential hunter while denying them sanctuary or aid.

Lore & Background
Within the shadowed hierarchy of the assassin world, order is maintained through strict adherence to ancient codes. The High Table serves as the governing body that ensures these rules are followed across international borders. John is declared excommunicado for conducting business on Continental grounds, one of the underworld's two unbreakable rules. The declaration of Excommunicado severs all ties between the offender and the underworld community.
Reader's Guide
In the films the status is triggered by killing within the Continental Hotel. In the main story it follows John's killing of Santino D'Antonio in the lounge of the New York Continental at the end of Chapter 2. Winston, as the hotel's manager, is forced by the High Table's rules to declare it, but delays it by one hour and gives John a marker for future use. Once declared, every assassin in the world becomes a hunter.
A massive bounty is placed on the target's head, incentivizing rivals and mercenaries alike to seek them out for profit or survival. Continental and underworld services are no longer afforded to the target: in Chapter 3 an underworld doctor stops treating John when the status activates, and he has to finish the suturing himself. This isolation forces the subject into a desperate fight for survival against overwhelming odds within their own community.
The arc often concludes with either death or redemption through extreme measures. Only the Elder, who sits above the High Table, can rescind it. John crosses the desert to find the Elder, who agrees to forgive him if he kills Winston and serves the High Table for the rest of his life; John severs his ring finger and gives the Elder his wedding ring.
