Lore & Background

The decision to fire the shot was not made lightly. Winston operates within a system where rules are absolute, yet his personal connection to John complicates his duty as a Hotel Manager. By shooting Wick in front of the Adjudicator, Winston satisfied the immediate demand for blood while leaving a sliver of ambiguity regarding the outcome. The aftermath revealed layers of deception within the underworld. John survives: severely injured, he is secretly delivered to the Bowery King in an underground bunker, and the two agree to join forces against the High Table. The New York Continental is destroyed later, in Chapter 4, by the Marquis, who punishes Winston for failing to kill John.

Reader's Guide

The conflict begins when John is declared excommunicado for killing the High Table crime lord Santino D'Antonio on Continental grounds at the end of Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, a High Table Adjudicator gives Winston seven days to resign as manager for having helped John. Winston refuses to abdicate, and the Adjudicator revokes the hotel's neutral status and sends Zero and the High Table's enforcers to kill John and Winston. After John defeats the enforcers and Zero, Winston parleys with the Adjudicator on the roof, offers his allegiance to the High Table and shoots John.

John falls to the street below. Winston reassumes his position, while the severely injured John is secretly delivered to the Bowery King. In Chapter 4 the Marquis chastises Winston for having failed to kill John. As punishment the Marquis strips Winston of his managerial duties, declares him excommunicado, destroys the New York Continental and executes Charon. After John wins his duel against the Marquis, the Harbinger reinstates Winston as manager of the New York Continental.
