Gameplay

Players move units such as explorers, colonists, and soldiers across a blacked-out world, revealing mountains, plains, and rivers. The first player to discover a landmark names it. After mapping terrain, players build a colony and make it self-sufficient by constructing sawmills, metal mines, housing, and farms to generate resources and space for expansion. Eventually, players train armies to conquer other colonists and declare independence from their mother country. The player chooses one of six nations, including five European powers and the High Natives. The turn-based game uses an isometric viewpoint with three-dimensional terrain. Combat occurs on a 3x4 battlefield where victory requires killing all enemy troops or capturing the enemy flag. Colonies have a Colony Centre that defines an area for building placement; most buildings can be upgraded. Victory conditions are customizable, ranging from pure conquest to a peaceful race for victory points.

Reception

A Next Generation reviewer found Conquest of the New World less enthralling than Civilization II or Sid Meier's Colonization, and lacking flair for casual players, but praised its simplicity and need for forethought, which appealed to hardcore strategy fans. The ability to set colonies or military on automatic was highlighted. Trent Ward of GameSpot disagreed, calling the game less dry than other historical simulations, with tactically deep yet short battles, and outstanding features like naming landmarks and networked multiplayer. Scott Gehrs of Computer Game Review recommended it for strategy players. The game scored 3/5 in Computer Games Magazine and 4/5 in Adrenaline Vault.
