Amiga Power noted the mouse-only control as intuitive, praised the extensive library of opening moves, and described the tutoring level as comprehensive. Génération 4 found it superior to its competition, visually appealing, and free of major faults. Jay Kee of Computer Gaming World compared it favorably to the Taj Mahal and Bo Jackson, calling it outstanding. Judith Kilbury-Cobb for .info recommended it to players of all skill levels. InCider remarked that the game visibly demonstrates its process of evaluating hundreds of possible moves. Cameron Crotty for Electronic Entertainment highlighted its strong gameplay suitable for advanced club players, a bare-bones interface allowing control over the computer's style, and the ability to direct the Mac to play a specific line from its large opening library.
