Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull introduces a telepathic artifact that shifts the series from historical archaeology to 1950s science fiction. Set in 1957, this fourth installment pits Indiana Jones against Soviet KGB agents led by Irina Spalko, who search for a crystal skull located in Peru. The film pays tribute to B movies of the era, featuring an alien mummy from Roswell and a journey to the mythical city Akator. Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by David Koepp, the story follows Jones as he is reunited with former lover Marion Ravenwood and their son, Mutt Williams, to stop Spalko from using the skull's power.

The skull originates from one of thirteen "interdimensional beings" worshipped as deities by early Ugha tribes in Peru. According to the plot, Harold "Ox" Oxley went insane after discovering the skull six months before the film's events, and it commanded him to return it to Akator. Spalko explains that the skulls are alien and intends to use them to project Soviet propaganda into American minds. When returned to its skeleton in Akator, the skull offers omniscience before combining with other skeletons into a reanimated alien. This entity transfers overwhelming knowledge into Spalko's mind, vaporizing her as an interdimensional portal opens above the chamber.

The film was released on May 22, 2008, following its premiere at the 61st Cannes Film Festival on May 18. To maintain aesthetic continuity, cinematographer Janusz Kamiński studied Douglas Slocombe's style, and the crew relied on traditional stunt work instead of computer-generated doubles. Harrison Ford, aged 64, spent three hours daily at a gym and practiced with his bullwhip for two weeks. He performed many stunts himself, refusing to dye his hair to reflect the character's age. Shooting began on June 18, 2007, at locations in New Mexico, New Haven, Connecticut, Hawaii and Fresno, California, as well as on sound stages in Los Angeles. The film grossed $786.6 million globally, becoming the second-highest-grossing film of 2008.
