Marion Ravenwood serves as the emotional anchor for the archaeologist throughout his most perilous journeys. Introduced in Nepal, where Indiana Jones visits her because he needs a possession of her father, Abner Ravenwood, to locate the Ark of the Covenant, she quickly reveals herself to be more than a romantic interest. Roger Ebert said Allen gives Marion a charming toughness. Years later, in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, she returns and reveals that her son Mutt is Indy's son.

Spielberg originally intended the role for his girlfriend Amy Irving; Sean Young and Stephanie Zimbalist auditioned, Barbara Hershey was considered and Debra Winger turned it down. Spielberg cast Karen Allen on the strength of her performance in National Lampoon's Animal House; she screen tested opposite Tim Matheson and John Shea before Harrison Ford was cast as Indiana. Allen came up with her own backstory for the character, such as her romance with Jones in her early to mid-teens and her time in Nepal. Spielberg wanted Allen to return for Temple of Doom, but George Lucas decided that Indy would have a different love interest in each film; she returned 27 years later in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) and again in the Dial of Destiny (2023).
