In the film's opening, Belloq and Hovitos tribesmen force Indiana to hand over a fertility idol he has braved numerous booby traps to obtain; the novelization says their rivalry began at graduate school, when Belloq plagiarized Indiana's essay on stratigraphy. He aids the Nazis in finding the Ark of the Covenant because he wants to use the relic to speak with God. His downfall comes on an island in the Aegean Sea, where he ceremonially opens the Ark while the Nazis hold Jones and Marion captive. The spirits released from the Ark engulf Belloq in flames and kill him, while Jones and Marion, who keep their eyes closed, are spared.
