Lore & Background

Three years on, the war in the Stepstones is going badly for Daemon and the Velaryons, and Viserys refuses to send aid. He leads the court on a hunt to celebrate Aegon's second nameday, intending to kill a white hart, considered a royal good omen. Rhaenyra, believing her father means to replace her as heir, storms away from camp with Ser Criston Cole; she later meets the white hart and lets it go unharmed, while Viserys settles for an ordinary hart held down by his guards. Viserys dismisses Lord Jason Lannister's marriage suit for Rhaenyra, Otto Hightower proposes betrothing her to the two-year-old Aegon, and Lord Lyonel Strong advises a match with Ser Laenor Velaryon.

Reader's Guide

Viserys assures Rhaenyra she will never be replaced as his heir, and on Alicent's advice sends reinforcements to the Stepstones. When word of this reaches Daemon he beats the messenger, then feigns surrender to lure the Crabfeeder's army into the open; the Velaryon infantry led by Corlys and Vaemond counterattacks while Laenor cuts off the enemy's escape on his dragon Seasmoke. Daemon pursues Craghas Drahar into the caverns and kills him.
