Mars is the base of the Mechanicum, the cult of machine-worshipping technologists that serves as the chief engineering authority of the young Imperium and the sole power responsible for all its civil and military technology.

Horus's rebellion leads to civil war on Mars itself: Kelbor-Hal, Fabricator General of Mars and the technocracy's supreme leader, declares for Horus, and together they stage a coup to eliminate the Tech-priests and Magi loyal to Terra and the Emperor. Whichever side gains Mars' support gains a crucial advantage. Later stories cover the blockade of Mars after the schism, and loyal Primarchs set out to besiege the Dark Mechanicum there.
