Horizon Hunters Gathering

A cooperative action game set in the Horizon universe.

Horizon Hunters Gathering is a cooperative action game in development at Guerrilla Games, with Sony Interactive Entertainment handling publication. It takes place within the Horizon universe and is planned for release on PlayStation 5 and Windows. The game departs from the main series’ photorealistic style, adopting a cartoon-inspired visual approach, and emphasizes teamwork in multiplayer sessions.

Players form three-person squads, each choosing from a set of predefined Hunters such as the Oseram smuggler Ensa or the Carja operative Shadow, who is accompanied by a Stalker machine. Every Hunter has distinct weapons, abilities, and a preferred combat style—either melee or ranged. A roguelite perk system governs character progression, allowing players to tailor builds for their team’s strategy. Cross-platform play and cross-progression are supported between PlayStation 5 and Windows. While the game is built for online co-op, solo play is possible: players use Training Modules to learn the basics and are aided by two AI-controlled teammates drawn from the Hunter roster.

Between missions, players gather at the central social hub called the Hunters Gathering. There, they can interact with others, buy upgrades from vendors, improve their gear, and customize their characters. The game includes several modes. Episodes form a narrative campaign, introducing new mechanics and story beats through specific missions. Machine Incursion is a wave-based survival mode where players defend against machines emerging from underground gateways; it features escalating difficulty tiers that can pit the team against multiple bosses at once. Cauldron Descent is a longer, multi-stage trial set inside a Cauldron, with changing rooms and roguelite elements.

The story is canon within the Horizon timeline, occurring after the events of Horizon Forbidden West. It follows a new group of Hunters, each dealing with personal struggles and motivations, as they protect humanity from an evolving machine threat. Developers have stated that the narrative will introduce fresh mysteries, characters, and regional dangers, and will expand through post-launch updates. Missions take place across varied global regions, including the jungles and deserts of Breakers’ Bounty, Ashwater Valley, and the returning Devil’s Thirst.

Lore & Background

Horizon Hunters Gathering takes place chronologically after the events of Horizon Forbidden West (2022). Reader's Guide

Horizon Hunters Gathering is significant as a standalone multiplayer project within the Horizon franchise, marking a departure from the series' single-player tradition. Its stylized art direction and roguelite perk system offer a distinct gameplay experience. The game supports cross-platform play and cross-progression between PlayStation 5 and Windows. A closed playtest was launched in 2026 to refine multiplayer balance. In August 2026, internal sources reported that Sony had reset development following negative playtest feedback, removing the live service component in favor of a cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode. The game's legacy will depend on its eventual release and reception, but it represents a notable expansion of the Horizon universe into cooperative play.
