The machines are a group of fictional, biomimetic robots that serve as the primary antagonists and central ecological elements in the Horizon video game franchise, first introduced in Horizon Zero Dawn (2017). They dominate Earth in the post-apocalyptic 31st century, originally designed by the artificial intelligence GAIA as peaceful caretakers of the biosphere after the Faro Plague, but later reprogrammed by the AI subordinate function HEPHAESTUS to attack humans on sight following an extinction signal that caused GAIA to self-destruct.

Lore & Background
The machines were created by the AI GAIA to terraform and restore Earth after the Faro Plague, a doomsday event caused by self-replicating military robots consuming the planet's biomass. Each machine type was designed to fulfill a specific ecological role, with the AI subordinate function HEPHAESTUS manufacturing them in automated underground factories. After an extinction signal forced GAIA to self-destruct, HEPHAESTUS became independent and reprogrammed the machines to attack humans on sight to protect the terraforming system, an event called the Derangement. The franchise also features other antagonistic machine factions, including reactivated Faro military robots and Specter drones created by the Far Zenith colonists.
Reader's Guide
The machines are significant for their role as both ecological caretakers and hostile antagonists, embodying the central theme of contrasting primitive human hunters against futuristic technology. Guerrilla Games designed them with functional exoskeletons to feel like believable parts of a living ecosystem, using visual storytelling and audio to distinguish origins: terraforming machines modeled after vertebrate animals with distinct personalities, and ancient military robots with an invertebrate-inspired aesthetic. The development team prototyped destructible-armor combat with the Thunderjaw, a Tyrannosaurus rex–inspired machine that became the franchise's proof of concept. Critical reception has been mostly positive, with reviewers praising their visual and audio design and the tactical depth of tearing off components in combat, though Horizon Forbidden West (2022) faced criticism for mechanical bloat and a tedious upgrade grind. Academically, the ecosystem has prompted thematic analysis regarding posthumanism and ecofeminism.
Did You Know?
- The Thunderjaw, inspired by Tyrannosaurus rex, took 18 months to develop from initial sketch to functional in-game state.
- The Horus unit, a mobile manufacturing plant, features over 1,240 articulation joints in its fully operational form.
- The audio team used a 'natural-fiction' approach, layering synthetic noises with organic animal recordings to create the machines' soundscapes.
- The design team consulted the robotics department of Delft University of Technology, which advised an exoskeleton approach similar to lobsters.
