GAIA System

The AI that oversaw the restoration of life on Earth after the Faro Plague.

Last updated

GAIA is the central artificial intelligence that controlled Project Zero Dawn, an underground network of cloning facilities and databases created to restore Earth after the extinction of life. Conceived and built by scientists before the Faro Plague consumed all life, GAIA oversaw the deactivation of the Faro machines via the separate AI MINERVA, while her sub-function HEPHAESTUS constructed animalistic machines to rebuild the biosphere. Using stored DNA, she reseeded the planet with new life, though the intention for future humans to learn from past mistakes was tied to the APOLLO sub-function. Her existence bridges the gap between the advanced Old Ones and the primitive tribes of the 31st century.

Lore & Background

Project Zero Dawn was spearheaded by Elisabet Sobeck to create an automated terraforming system. GAIA managed this network, which included specialized sub-functions like AETHER and POSEIDON to handle specific ecological tasks. After the separate AI MINERVA transmitted the deactivation codes for the Faro machines, HEPHAESTUS built new machines to restore nature, and GAIA reseeded life on Earth with stored DNA. However, Ted Faro sabotaged the APOLLO subsystem containing humanity's history, ensuring future generations would remain tribal.

Later, a transmission of unknown origin caused HADES, a subsystem designed for controlled extinction if terraforming failed, to go rogue. In an attempt to stop HADES, GAIA triggered a self-destruct, but before doing so she created a clone of Elisabet Sobeck in the form of Aloy, hoping she could one day stop HADES. The self-destruct destroyed only GAIA and severely damaged HADES, leaving HADES as a fragmented AI. Meanwhile, HEPHAESTUS, the sub-function responsible for machine construction, went rogue and began building aggressive machines, an event known as the Derangement.

Origins and Core Narrative

Project Zero Dawn was a project spearheaded by Elisabet Sobeck to create an automated terraforming system. GAIA controlled this network of facilities designed to restore life after humanity's extinction.

However, Ted Faro sabotaged the subsystem containing humanity's history, reducing new generations to tribal societies. Later, a transmission of unknown origin caused HADES, a subsystem originally designed for controlled extinction, to go rogue. This caused GAIA to self-destruct in an attempt to stop HADES, losing control of her terraforming network and causing machines to become aggressive.

Gameplay Mechanics and World Design

Aloy wears a Focus that scans machines to identify their location, susceptibilities, level, and loot. She can hack a selection of machines with her spear, turning some into makeshift mounts. Scaling and hacking Tallnecks reveals locations on the map. The game features an open world where players explore underground ruins to unlock additional machines to hack.

Franchise Expansion and Spin-offs

Events in Horizon Zero Dawn are reinterpreted comically in Lego Horizon Adventures. A film adaptation is currently in development by PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures.

Critical Reception and Cultural Impact

Horizon Zero Dawn received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its setting, story, visuals, and combat. The game won one British Academy Games Award and two D.I.C.E. Awards.

Reader's Guide

To understand GAIA, players must follow Aloy through the main questline which handles major mysteries regarding her origins. The Focus device helps identify machine locations and susceptibilities, while hacking machines with a spear can reveal map details or create mounts. Scaling Tallnecks reveals locations of interest. Players explore underground ruins to unlock additional hacking opportunities.

The narrative unfolds as Aloy defeats the Eclipse cultists and unlocks the mountain door. Inside, she finds logs explaining how Ted Faro sabotaged history and how HADES's corruption caused the Derangement. Repairing GAIA's systems or understanding her contingency plan is crucial for resolving the conflict with HADES and restoring order to the terraforming network.
