Originally, the Bores were constructed under secret orders by the Magisterium. Their goal was to siphon Dust from other worlds to sustain the Authority and extend their power indefinitely. This project remained hidden from most scholars, operating in the shadows of scientific exploration. The tunnels allowed for unauthorized travel but primarily served as pipelines for the dark matter that defines consciousness. However, the operation had a fatal flaw. By opening these holes, the Magisterium inadvertently allowed Death to enter living worlds. Dust is the source of life and maturity; its removal weakens civilizations and leaves them vulnerable to entropy. The Bores became wounds in reality where souls could be lost forever into the void between dimensions. The discovery of the Bore Threshold's true purpose drives the final journey of Lyra and Will. They realize that leaving these tunnels open would doom countless worlds to decay. Their mission shifts from exploration to containment, requiring them to travel through the dangerous passages themselves to cut the connections at their source.

In Their Own Story

Lyra stepped toward the edge where the air shimmered like oil on water. Iorek Byrnison stood beside her, his armor gleaming in the dim light of the alien sun. There was no sound coming from the hole in the world, only a cold draft that smelled of old stone and silence. Will held the knife steady, his hands trembling slightly as he prepared to cut the final thread. They knew that once they closed this threshold, the path between worlds would vanish forever. Dust swirled around them like golden snow, resisting the pull of the void one last time before fading into nothingness.

Reader's Guide

The Bore Threshold exists in the void between universes, defying standard gravity and light perception. Travelers passing through experience a sensation of falling through absolute darkness where time loses linear meaning. Unlike windows cut by the Subtle Knife, which are clean cuts, Bores are rough tunnels drilled into reality's fabric. This structural difference makes them unstable and dangerous for daemons who might drift away in the void. Geographically, there is no land or sky within the Threshold; it is a non-Euclidean space connecting distinct worlds without physical distance. Societal rules do not apply here as few beings survive passage without specific protection from Dust. The connection points are often hidden in remote locations, such as deep forests or underwater trenches on various planets. Access requires specific coordinates known only to initiates of the Magisterium. Closing these thresholds required sealing the breach from both ends simultaneously using the Subtle Knife. This process stopped the flow of Dust and prevented Death from entering inhabited worlds permanently. The act fundamentally altered the relationship between universes, isolating them once more for safety and allowing life to flourish without external interference.
