Lyra grows up in a world where dress styles resemble the UK's Edwardian era and zeppelins replace fixed-wing aircraft. She is initially raised at Jordan College, where she witnesses her uncle Lord Asriel attempt to be poisoned by the Master. After saving him, Lyra learns about Dust, mysterious elementary particles that the Church believes are the basis of sin. Her friend Roger is kidnapped by the Gobblers, a child abduction ring secretly funded by the Church and led by her new guardian, Mrs Coulter. Lyra flees to join the Gyptians, canal-faring nomads whose children have also been abducted. They reveal that Lord Asriel and Mrs Coulter are actually Lyra's parents. She recruits Iorek Byrnison, an armoured bear, and aeronaut Lee Scoresby for a rescue expedition to the Arctic. At Bolvangar, she discovers the Gobblers are performing intercision, severing children from their daemons to prevent adult emotions. After escaping with Roger, she travels to Svalbard where Asriel severs Roger's bond to create an opening to another universe, killing him in the process.

In Northern Lights, Lyra warns Lord Asriel of a poisoning attempt at Jordan College before spying on his lecture about Dust. Kidnapped by her own mother, Mrs Coulter, she escapes to find the Gobblers' station at Bolvangar. There, she reunites with Roger but witnesses the horror of intercision. Rescued by Lee Scoresby, Iorek Byrnison, and Serafina Pekkala's flying witch clan, Lyra is taken to the castle of the usurping bear king, Iofur Raknison. She tricks Iofur into fighting the rightful king, Iorek, who kills him. In The Subtle Knife, Lyra journeys through Asriel's opening to Cittàgazze, a city whose reckless world-traveling released Spectres that destroy adult souls. Here she meets Will Parry, a twelve-year-old from our Oxford. Together they retrieve her stolen alethiometer from Lord Boreal using the Subtle Knife. In The Amber Spyglass, Lyra is kidnapped by Mrs Coulter, an agent of the Magisterium who identifies her as the next Eve. With help from angels and Gallivespian spies, Will rescues her from a cave. They journey to the Land of the Dead to release ghosts, while Mary Malone discovers Dust nourishes self-aware life.
