Yevgeni Belosheikin
Soviet goaltender touted as Tretiak's successor, career derailed by alcoholism.
Yevgeni Vladimirovich Belosheikin was a Soviet professional ice hockey goaltender who played for HC CSKA Moscow and SKA Leningrad. He was considered the heir apparent to Vladislav Tretiak, wore his number 20, and was tutored by Tretiak, though their styles differed. Belosheikin was the outstanding goaltender of the 1986 IIHF World U20 Championships and started for the U.S.S.R. at the 1986 and 1987 Ice Hockey World Championships, winning gold and silver. He also played in the 1987 Canada Cup and Rendez-vous '87. His career was cut short by alcoholism and related health problems, and he died by suicide in 1999.
