Playing career

Williams began his major junior career after being selected 64th overall by the Regina Pats in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. He debuted in the WHL on 18 January 2011 in a 4–3 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors. His first WHL points, two assists, came on 13 October 2012 in a 4–3 win over the Everett Silvertips; he finished his rookie season with 19 assists in 59 games. He scored his first two WHL goals on 14 December 2013 in a 5–4 overtime loss to the Kelowna Rockets, and in his sophomore season recorded nine goals and 23 assists over 66 games. In the 2014–15 season he improved to 11 goals and 30 assists in 64 games. Before his final WHL season, Williams was named captain of the Pats as an overage player, but a wrist injury limited him to 19 games, in which he had five goals and seven assists. Drafted 173rd overall by the Washington Capitals in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, he made his professional debut on 22 October 2016 with the Hershey Bears in a 5–2 win against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, recording his first AHL assist. His first professional goal, a game-winner, came on 4 November 2016 in a 3–2 overtime win over the Springfield Thunderbirds. He finished his first professional season with four goals and 12 assists in 60 games and won the Bears' rookie of the year award. On 2 March 2017, the Capitals signed him to a two-year entry-level contract. In the 2017–18 AHL season he played 69 games with three goals and 14 assists for the Bears, and in 2018–19 he had ten assists in 36 games. The Capitals re-signed him to a one-year two-way contract extension on 13 July 2019; he appeared in 31 games with six assists for the Bears in the 2019–20 AHL season. On 8 January 2021, the Belleville Senators signed Williams to a one-year AHL contract. As a free agent, he signed his first contract abroad on 20 July 2022 with Admiral Vladivostok of the KHL. After splitting the 2025–26 season with CSKA Moscow and Lada Togliatti, Williams opted to continue in the KHL, agreeing to a one-year deal with HC Sochi on 4 June 2026.
