Playing career
Nick Ebert started his junior career with a bang, going 17th overall to the Windsor Spitfires in the 2010 OHL Draft and earning a spot on the OHL First All-Rookie Team for the 2010–11 season. But his stock took a hit after a rough sophomore year, and he slid all the way to the seventh round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, where the Los Angeles Kings grabbed him with the very last pick. In December 2013, the Kings shipped Ebert and captain Kerby Rychel to the Guelph Storm for Brody Milne and eight OHL Draft picks. After the 2012–13 OHL season, he joined the Ontario Reign for their playoff run. He went back to the OHL the next year and helped the Storm capture the J. Ross Robertson Cup as league champions. Ebert inked a three-year entry-level deal with the Kings in May 2014 and won the Calder Cup with the Manchester Monarchs the following season. In June 2016, the Kings traded him to the Dallas Stars for Jack Campbell. After attending Dallas’s training camp for the 2016–17 season, he spent the whole year with the AHL’s Texas Stars, locking down a top-four role on defense and posting career highs of 9 goals and 16 assists for 25 points in 68 games. As an unsigned free agent that summer, he put his North American career on hold by signing with HC Slovan Bratislava of the KHL in August 2017. He left Bratislava, which was out of playoff contention, after 44 games to join Örebro HK of the SHL in February 2018. In his first full season with Örebro in 2018–19, he led the team in average ice time and racked up 33 points in 49 games, the fourth-highest total among SHL defensemen. Hoping to restart his NHL career, Ebert exercised his out-clause to leave Örebro in June 2019 and signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Ottawa Senators.
