Playing career

Tolchinsky participated in the 2008 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament as a member of the HC CSKA Moscow youth team. He went undrafted and initially played for Krasnaya Armiya Moscow in the Minor Hockey League before moving to North America to play junior hockey with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League. On August 22, 2013, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes and was returned to the Greyhounds for the 2013–14 season. After his second season with Sault Ste. Marie, he signed an amateur try-out contract with the Hurricanes' AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, and made his professional debut in a single game. In the 2015–16 season, his first full professional year, he was recalled to make his NHL debut with the Hurricanes on March 31, 2016. In his final year under contract with Carolina, he played for the Checkers in the AHL during the 2017–18 season, recording 26 points in 43 regular season games. On May 7, 2018, the Checkers confirmed that Tolchinsky had left the team at his request and returned to Russia as an impending restricted free agent. On June 21, 2018, he returned to former club CSKA Moscow on an initial try-out basis. After two seasons with CSKA, he signed a two-year contract with Avangard Omsk on May 8, 2020. In the 2020–21 season, playing on Avangard's top scoring line, he recorded career bests of 15 goals and 31 assists for 46 points in 51 regular season games. He led the club with 20 points in 24 playoff games and scored the championship-clinching goal in a 1–0 victory to help Avangard Omsk win their first Gagarin Cup on April 29, 2020, earning KHL Playoffs MVP honors. After three seasons with Avangard, he left as a free agent and signed a five-year contract with SKA Saint Petersburg on May 23, 2023. Following two seasons with SKA, he mutually left the club and signed a two-year contract with Metallurg Magnitogorsk on July 8, 2025.
