Playing career
Kalinin began his professional career in Russia with Avangard Omsk of the KHL, going undrafted. Over five seasons with Avangard, he set career highs in the 2014–15 season with 12 goals, 13 assists, 25 points, 49 penalty minutes and 58 games played, while serving as the club’s captain at age 23. On May 29, 2015, he signed a one-year entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils. In his first NHL campaign, he recorded eight goals and seven assists for 15 points with 33 penalty minutes in 78 games. On July 6, 2016, he agreed to a one-year deal as a restricted free agent to remain with the Devils. The following season he posted four points in 43 games before being placed on waivers on February 17, 2017 for assignment to the AHL. After clearing waivers, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defensive prospect Viktor Lööv; Toronto made the trade rather than claim him to avoid exceeding the 50-contract limit before the March 1 trade deadline. He was immediately assigned to the Toronto Marlies. As a free agent from the Maple Leafs, he returned to Russia on July 1, 2017, signing a three-year deal with SKA Saint Petersburg. On August 8, 2018, SKA traded him to HC CSKA Moscow in exchange for Andrei Kuzmenko. After two seasons with CSKA, he left as a free agent and signed a two-year contract with Traktor Chelyabinsk on July 15, 2020. On October 15, 2024, he joined HC Vityaz as a free agent on a two-year deal through 2026.
