Playing career
Shumakov began his KHL career with HC Sibir Novosibirsk in the 2011–12 season, remaining with the club for seven years. On 1 May 2017, the opening day of free agency, he was traded along with Maxim Shalunov and Konstantin Okulov to HC CSKA Moscow in exchange for Alexander Sharov and financial compensation. In his first season with CSKA, 2017–18, he recorded career highs of 23 assists and 40 points in 47 regular-season games. CSKA Moscow terminated his contract on 27 August 2018. Seeking an NHL opportunity, Shumakov signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Washington Capitals on 1 September 2018. After four points in ten games with the AHL's Hershey Bears and no NHL recall, the Capitals mutually terminated his contract on 7 December. He then signed a professional try-out with the Springfield Thunderbirds on 8 December, scoring one goal in three games before ending the tryout on 13 December. Shumakov returned to the KHL on 19 December, agreeing to a three-year contract with Avangard Omsk. During the 2020–21 season, he recorded eight goals and 13 points in 28 games before being traded by Omsk to Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg for financial compensation on 9 December 2020. After a season split between Traktor Chelyabinsk and HC Dinamo Minsk, he signed a one-year contract with Lada Togliatti on 21 June 2023 for their return to the KHL. Un-signed for the 2024–25 season, he rejoined Lada Togliatti on 8 October 2025 but left by mutual agreement on 17 November 2025 after three scoreless games. Shumakov announced his retirement on 14 July 2026.
