Playing career
Joakim Nordström first played in the Swedish Hockey League on September 23, 2010, facing Södertälje SK. He inked a three-year entry-level deal with the Chicago Blackhawks on May 29, 2012, but stayed with AIK for the 2012-13 campaign. His NHL debut came with the Blackhawks on October 1, 2013, and he notched his first goal ten days later, beating New York Islanders goaltender Kevin Poulin. After being assigned to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs on October 21, 2013, he played there until the Blackhawks recalled him on April 2, 2014.
During the 2014-15 season, Nordström served as captain of the IceHogs while also appearing in 38 games for Chicago, including three playoff contests, and was on the roster when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2015. On March 13, 2015, he received a two-game suspension for a boarding hit on Arizona Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson from the previous night. As the 2015-16 season approached, the Blackhawks traded him along with Kris Versteeg to the Carolina Hurricanes on September 11, 2015, in a move to shed salary.
After three years with the Hurricanes organization, Nordström became a free agent and signed a two-year, $2 million contract with the Boston Bruins on July 1, 2018. He scored his first goal for Boston on October 12, 2018, netting the third tally in a 4-1 home win over the Edmonton Oilers. When that deal ended, he joined his fourth NHL club, the Calgary Flames, on a one-year, $700,000 contract on October 19, 2020. Following his eighth NHL season, during which the Flames missed the playoffs, Nordström left North America as a free agent and signed a one-year contract with CSKA Moscow of the KHL on June 4, 2021. In the 2021-22 season, he played a checking-line role, recording three goals and 14 points in 27 regular-season games. He appeared in two playoff games before terminating his contract with CSKA on March 4, 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As a free agent, he moved to the Swiss National League, signing a two-year deal with HC Davos on June 2, 2022.
