Playing career
Bud Holloway got his start in major junior hockey with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League, where he played from 2004 to 2008. He then turned pro, splitting the 2008–09 season between the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs and the ECHL’s Ontario Reign. After two more seasons with the Monarchs, he headed overseas. On July 25, 2011, Holloway signed as a free agent with Skellefteå AIK of the Swedish Hockey League, joining the club around the same time as his former Monarchs teammate Oscar Möller. With Skellefteå, Holloway won back-to-back Swedish National Championships in 2013 and 2014. He also took home the Golden Helmet Award as the SHL’s Player of the Year for the 2012–13 season. Holloway still holds the SHL playoff record for most points in a single postseason, notching 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) during the 2011–12 playoffs, beating Espen Knutsen’s previous mark of 21 points set in 1999–2000. The next regular season, Holloway became just the second player in SHL history—after Håkan Loob in 1982–83—to surpass 70 points in a season, finishing with 20 goals and 51 assists for 71 points. After three seasons in Sweden, Holloway left Skellefteå on May 17, 2014, signing a two-year free-agent deal with SC Bern of the Swiss NLA. He won the Swiss Cup with Bern and appeared in 53 NLA games, putting up 17 goals and 28 assists. He parted ways with SC Bern after the 2014–15 season. On July 1, 2015, Holloway signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Montreal Canadiens. He made his NHL debut—and his only NHL appearance to date—on November 27, 2015, against the New Jersey Devils. He spent most of that season with Montreal’s AHL affiliate, the St. John’s IceCaps. One of his most memorable moments that year came against the Binghamton Senators, when he made a diving, mid-air stick save to prevent an empty-net goal. Holloway then returned to Skellefteå AIK for three more seasons, leaving after the 2018–19 campaign. On June 6, 2019, he signed a one-year free-agent deal with EC Red Bull Salzburg of the Austrian EBEL.
