The ink swirled on the page without a hand guiding it, forming words that seemed to bleed from the leather itself. Ginny stared at the journal, her quill trembling as the voice of Tom Riddle echoed in her mind, promising power and companionship. The room grew cold, shadows stretching unnaturally long across the stone walls of the abandoned bathroom. A thick mist began to rise from the open pages, coalescing into a boy who looked exactly like the handsome prefect she had seen in portraits, yet his eyes held the ancient malice of a monster waiting to be born.

This artifact functions as a Horcrux, an object used to store part of a wizard's soul. The creation of a Horcrux requires one to commit a murder, which 'rips the soul apart'. After the murder, a spell is cast to infuse part of the ripped soul into an object. The diary feeds on the emotions and memories of those who write in it, slowly draining their vitality to strengthen the trapped soul fragment. It is highly resistant to standard magical attacks. To neutralize this Horcrux, one must use a substance capable of destroying magic on a fundamental level: Basilisk venom. A single drop from the fangs of the Chamber's serpent is sufficient to burn through the protective enchantments and incinerate the soul fragment contained within, rendering the diary useless.
