Moonstone is a feldspar mineral with the chemical formula (Na,K)AlSi3O8, known for its pearly, opalescent shimmer. It is also called hecatolite, after the goddess Hecate. The common name comes from its signature visual effect—adularescence, or schiller—which gives the stone a milky, bluish glow from within.
This glow results from light diffracting through alternating microscopic layers of orthoclase and albite within the stone. Depending on how thin the albite layers are, the diffracted light can range from white to blue. These layers form as regular exsolution lamellae of different alkali feldspars. Polished moonstones often show chatoyancy, a bright streak across the surface, and very rarely, asterism that creates a four-legged star.
Most moonstone is a variety of the orthoclase feldspar adularia, named after an early mining site near Mt. Adular in Switzerland (now St. Gotthard). Some specimens also come from a solid solution of oligoclase and orthoclase. Deposits are found in Armenia (especially near Lake Sevan), Australia, the Austrian Alps, Mexico, Madagascar, Myanmar, Norway, Poland, India, Sri Lanka, and the United States. Historically, the finest transparent moonstones with strong blue sheen came from Myanmar; today, most commercial stones are from Sri Lanka.
All moonstone varieties display adularescence, caused by light interference from alternating albite and orthoclase layers. Gemologists classify several types. Blue moonstone, the finest labradorite variety, is highly transparent with strong blue adularescence and comes from Myanmar, India, Madagascar, Malawi, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Labradorite moonstone belongs to the plagioclase group (triclinic crystal system) and appears colorless, white, pale orange, or green with a blue sheen. Orthoclase moonstone (monoclinic) shows a white glow in colorless, white, orange, yellow, or brown stones. Adularescent labradorite with a multicolored glow is called "rainbow moonstone"—colorless and very transparent. Adularia itself forms in hydrothermal veins in mountains as colorless to white, cream, pale yellow to pink, or reddish-brown, glassy, prismatic, twinned crystals with a white to blue sheen.
Moonstone has been used in jewelry for millennia. Ancient Romans thought it came from solidified moon rays, and both Romans and Greeks linked it to their lunar deities. It became popular during the Art Nouveau period, with René Lalique and others creating many pieces. In 1970, Florida designated moonstone its state gemstone to honor the Moon landings launched from Kennedy Space Center, though the stone does not occur naturally there. In Thailand, it is called Mukdahan, after a northeastern province on the Mekong River; the name comes from a folklore about a magical gemstone resembling a pearl floating above the Mekong in that area.
