Emerald is a green gemstone and a variety of the mineral beryl, with its color coming from trace amounts of chromium or, occasionally, vanadium. It is one of the traditional "big four" precious gems, alongside diamonds, rubies, and sapphires. On the Mohs scale, emerald has a hardness of 7.5 to 8, but its toughness is considered poor because most stones contain many inclusions. As a cyclosilicate, it is often found alongside minerals such as quartz, muscovite, albite, schorl, microcline, fluorite, smoky quartz, and elbaite. In biblical times, an emerald—called *bareket* in Hebrew—was one of the stones on the breastplate of the High Priest of Israel.

The word "emerald" traces back through Old French and Middle English to Vulgar Latin, then to Latin *smaragdus*, and ultimately to the Ancient Greek *smáragdos*, meaning "green gem." The Greek term may have Semitic, Sanskrit, or Persian origins. According to Webster's Dictionary, the word was first used in the 14th century.

The value of an emerald is assessed using the four Cs: color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. Color is the most important factor. A top-quality emerald must have a pure, vivid green hue and a high degree of transparency. The exact shade depends on the presence and proportions of chromium, vanadium, and iron. In gemology, color is broken into hue, saturation, and tone. Emeralds range from yellow-green to blue-green, with the primary hue always being dark green; yellow and blue are normal secondary hues. Only stones that are medium to dark in tone qualify as emeralds—lighter ones are called green beryl. The finest emeralds are about 75% tone on a scale where 0% is colorless and 100% is opaque black. They also need strong saturation and a bright, vivid hue. Gray is the usual dulling modifier, giving a grayish green.

Clarity is judged by the naked eye, not under magnification. An emerald with no visible inclusions to normal vision is considered flawless. Stones without surface-breaking fissures are extremely rare, so almost all emeralds are treated to improve apparent clarity. Inclusions and fissures are sometimes called *jardin* (French for "garden") because of their mossy look. Each emerald's imperfections are unique and can help identify it. Eye-clean stones with a vivid primary green hue, no more than 15% of any secondary hue, and a medium-dark tone command the highest prices. Because of their uneven clarity, emeralds are often cut as cabochons rather than faceted. When faceted, they usually get an oval cut or the signature emerald cut—a rectangular shape with facets around the top edge.

Most emeralds are oiled after cutting to fill surface-reaching cracks, improving clarity and stability. Cedar oil, which has a similar refractive index, is commonly used, along with synthetic oils and polymers like Opticon. The cheapest emeralds may be treated with epoxy resins. These treatments are done in a vacuum chamber with mild heat to help the filler absorb. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission requires disclosure of oil treatment when the stone is sold. Oil treatment is traditional and widely accepted, but oiled emeralds are worth much less than untreated ones of similar quality. Untreated emeralds need a certificate from a licensed gemology lab. Green-tinted oil is not acceptable. Gems are graded on a four-step scale: none, minor, moderate, and highly enhanced—these refer to enhancement level, not clarity. A stone graded "none" may still have visible inclusions. Laboratories apply these criteria differently; some consider any oil or polymer as enhancement, while others ignore traces that don't improve the stone's appearance.

In antiquity, emeralds were mined in Ancient Egypt at Mount Smaragdus from around 1500 BC, and in India and Austria from at least the 14th century AD. The Egyptian mines were worked on an industrial scale by the Roman and Byzantine Empires, and later by Islamic conquerors, but mining there stopped after Colombian deposits were discovered. Today, only ruins remain. Colombia has historically been the world's largest producer, though its output has varied. For the decade up to 2005, Colombia supplied about 47% of global emeralds, but production has since declined due to factors like a lack of new discoveries, outdated mining technology, and global oversupply. The three main mining areas in Colombia are Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivo.
