Background

His shadow can destroy or control whatever it touches, lets him see through it, possess other bodies and take on the traits of anyone he eats, as he does with Gluttony's appetite and sense of smell. The power has limits: he needs a light source to cast the shadow, too bright a light can kill it, and he can only exist near his host body or along the underground transmutation circle that runs through Amestris, which he is charged with guarding.

Hubristic and scornful of humans, he mocks and shames almost everyone, including his fellow homunculi, yet keeps some attachment to his adoptive mother. The Elrics and their allies fight him repeatedly from the eve of the Promised Day; when a weakened Pride tries to hijack Edward's body, Kimblee's soul stops him and Edward smashes his body down to a tiny fetus-like form. Afterwards the powerless Pride is handed back to his mother and raised again, and two years later Selim is a far kinder child.

In the first anime Pride was instead King Bradley's true identity, with Selim an ordinary boy. Makoto Tsumura and Yūko Sanpei voice Selim in the Japanese series, Zarah Little and Brittney Karbowski in English, and Kokoro Terada plays him in the live-action films.
