The genus Tathicarpus was originally proposed as the sole member of the family Tathicarpidae by Pamela B. Hart et al in 2022, but this lineage is now treated as a subfamily of the Antennariidae. Its specific epithet honors its discoverer Dr. A. Graham Butler. The fish is found off the southern coast of New Guinea and along the coasts of Western Australia to 33° S latitude, the Northern Territory, and Queensland to 22° S latitude. It is a benthic species inhabiting inshore tropical waters and coral reefs.
The genus name Tathicarpus, meaning 'extending wrist', refers to its unusually long and arm-like pectoral fin lobes, which are largely detached from the sides of the body. Unlike other frogfish, it can move each of its 6-7 pectoral fin rays individually like fingers to steady itself or hold objects. The illicium (fishing rod) is very long, measuring 24-47% of standard length, and lacks dermal spines; the esca (lure) may measure up to 22% of standard length and consists of a thin, broad appendage covered with hair-like filaments with 1-2 dark spots at the base.
