Rhycherus
A genus of Australian endemic frogfishes with ragged appearance.
Rhycherus is a genus of marine ray-finned fish within the frogfish family Antennariidae, specifically placed in the subfamily Histiophryninae. These fish are found only in Australian waters. Some authorities, however, classify the genus in its own family, Rhycheridae, where it is the sole member, and refer to them as Balrog frogfishes.
The genus was first established in 1907 by Australian ichthyologist James Douglas Ogilby, who designated *Rhycherus wildii* as the type species, with a type locality of South Australia. That species is now considered a junior synonym of *Chironectes filamentosus*, originally described by François-Louis Laporte, comte de Castelnau in 1872 from St Vincent Gulf, South Australia. Taxonomic opinions vary: some place *Rhycherus* in the subfamily Histiophryninae within Antennariidae, while others put it in the monotypic family Rhycheridae. The 5th edition of *Fishes of the World* does not recognize subfamilies within Antennariidae, instead grouping the family—including this genus—in the suborder Antennarioidei and the order Lophiiformes, the anglerfishes.
The name *Rhycherus* comes from the Greek word for “ragged,” a reference to the shaggy appearance of *R. filamentosus*.
Two recognized species belong to the genus: *Rhycherus filamentosus* (the tasselled anglerfish) and *Rhycherus gloveri* (Glover’s anglerfish).
In these anglerfishes, the second and third dorsal spines are not hidden beneath the skin. All rays in the caudal fin are forked. The skin is smooth, lacking dermal denticles, but is covered with many closely set cutaneous appendages. The third dorsal spine is mostly free, with only its basal quarter to third connected to the nape by a membrane. The largest species, *R. filamentosus*, reaches a maximum total length of 23 cm (9.1 in).
Both species are endemic to Australia. *R. filamentosus* occurs in southeastern waters, while *R. gloveri* is found in the southwest. They inhabit algal-covered rocky reefs down to depths of about 150 m (490 ft).
These fish are oviparous. Females lay large eggs, each attached to a rock surface by a long filament. The male guards the eggs with his body until they hatch. Like other anglerfishes, they are ambush predators, using their illicium (or esca) to lure prey.
