Echinophryne mitchellii goes by several common names, including long-spined frogfish, bristly frogfish, Mitchell's anglerfish, Mitchell's frogfish, prickly angler fish, and spinycoat anglerfish. This marine ray-finned fish belongs to the frogfish family Antennariidae, within the subfamily Histiophryninae, and is found only in the temperate waters off southern Australia.

The species was first formally described in 1897 as *Antennarius mitchellii* by American-born Australian naturalist Alexander Morton, with the type locality given as Lisdillon in eastern Tasmania. Although Morton's name appears on the description, it may have actually been written by James Douglas Ogilby. Taxonomic classification varies: some authorities place *Echinophryne* in the subfamily Histiophryninae within Antennariidae, while others consider it part of the family Histiophrynidae. The 5th edition of *Fishes of the World*, however, does not recognize subfamilies within Antennariidae, instead placing the family within the suborder Antennarioidei of the order Lophiiformes (the anglerfishes).

The genus name *Echinophryne* combines *echinos* ("spiny"), referring to the type species' skin described as "thickly beset with large, upstanding, bifurcate spinules," and *phryne* ("toad"), a common suffix for anglerfish genera. This "toad" element may date back to Aristotle and Cicero, who referred to anglerfishes as "fishing-frogs" and "sea-frogs," likely alluding to their frog- or toad-like appearance. The specific name *mitchellii* honors an unknown person, possibly Scottish-born Australian schoolteacher and paleontologist John Mitchell, an associate of Robert Etheridge, Junior, who was Ogilby's superior at the Australian Museum.

This species has a short, moderately compressed, deep body with a large head and a short caudal peduncle. Its eyes are small, and its upturned mouth is large, filled with many small, recurved teeth. The gill opening is small and located behind and below the base of the pectoral fin. The body lacks scales and is densely covered with bifurcate spinules, each spine three to four times longer than the distance between its points. A ring of tightly clustered spinules surrounds the eye.
