Smyrno is one of the four "barbarian" planetary kingdoms of the Anacreon Province, which exist under the religious influence of the Foundation. Mallow himself dislikes the Foundation's use of religion as a tool of control, viewing it as a limited strategy for expanding power compared to the commercial methods he champions.

Smyrno is one of the four "barbarian" planetary kingdoms of the Anacreon Province. These planets exist under the sphere of influence of the Foundation, yet they remain distinct from it. The Foundation employed priests and their Scientism religion to secure its influence over these local barbaric planets; Hober Mallow, a native of Smyrno, dislikes the religion itself. Mallow believes that the religious approach has limited use toward the Foundation's greater goal of amassing power across the galaxy, and pioneers commerce instead. Mayor Salvor Hardin had previously used Foundation priests to manage these kingdoms, but figures like Mallow represent a shift away from this method.
