Facts from the source article.
Contents
The book adds options for players and Dungeon Masters, with marginalia by the Xanathar of Waterdeep. Chapter 1 includes 31 new subclasses, character background ideas, and new racial feats. Chapter 2 expands on traps, downtime activities, tool proficiencies, spellcasting, and magic items. Chapter 3 covers spells. Appendices address shared campaigns and character names.
Publication history
Much of the content was developed through the public Unearthed Arcana playtest, and several subclasses appeared earlier in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. Free PDF excerpts were released during the Extra Life 2017 fundraiser. The book was released on November 21, 2017, with an alternate art cover edition pre-released to select game shops earlier that month. A 2022 boxed set, the Dungeons & Dragons Rules Expansion Gift Set, included new printings of this book and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Reception
Xanathar's Guide to Everything won the 2017 Origins Awards for Best Role-Playing Game Supplement and Fan Favorite Role-Playing Game Supplement. Publishers Weekly listed it as #1 in Hardcover Nonfiction for the week ending December 4, 2017, noting nearly 45,000 copies sold as a new release. ICv2 observed that these figures from BookScan exclude most friendly local game stores. Scott Thorne of ICv2 attributed the high sales to pent-up demand for the first official player-oriented book from Wizards of the Coast in almost two years, and to deep Amazon discounts, with one seller listing the book at 61% off.
