Coral reef fish are marine fish that live among or in close relation to coral reefs. These fish are part of ecosystems that have resulted from millions of years of coevolution among algae, invertebrates, and fish, creating crowded and complex environments. Most species found on reefs are ray-finned fishes, characterized by sharp, bony rays and spines in their fins that provide formidable defenses; these spines can often be locked in place or are venomous. Reef fish have also evolved cryptic coloration to confuse predators, as well as complex adaptive behaviors. Small reef fish gain protection by hiding in crevices or by shoaling and schooling. Many confine themselves to a small neighborhood where every hiding place is known, while others cruise the reefs for food in shoals but return to a known area to rest. Resting small fish remain vulnerable to crevice predators, so some, like triggerfish, squeeze into hiding spots and wedge themselves by erecting their spines. The orange-lined triggerfish, for example, is particularly aggressive and has a mouth that crushes shells; it can lock itself in a coral crevice with its spines. Surgeon fishes are herbivores that feed on benthic turf algae and also provide cleaning services to marine turtles by removing algal growth from their shells; they do not tolerate other fish of the same color or shape and can slash opponents with rapid sideways movements using spines in their tail. Coral reefs occupy less than 1% of the world’s ocean surface but provide a home for 25% of all marine fish species, a sharp contrast to open water habitats. However, loss and degradation of reef habitat, increasing pollution, and overfishing, including destructive fishing practices, threaten the survival of these reefs and their fish.
