Plot

Finley Tremaine’s life in Dreary, Idaho, is a grind: she lives on a farm with her stepmother Valerian, stepbrother Kale, and stepsister Saffron, who make her do all the chores and sleep in the cold barn. Her dream is to become an actress. When word spreads that popular actor Jackson Stone will film a musical about Billy the Kid in Dreary, the family plans to audition, but they tell Finley she can only come if she finishes her chores. She manages that, but then they order her to take her pet pig, Jon Ham, to the butcher and reveal they intend to sell the home—ignoring her protests that her deceased father built it. Instead of the butcher, Finley takes Jon Ham to a veterinarian, but the vet isn’t there, so she heads to the auditions. She shows off her singing, guitar, and lasso skills. Jon Ham slips his leash and runs wild; Finley tries to lasso him but gets pulled into the mud just as her family arrives. Jackson helps her up, impressed by her performance. They feel an attraction, but guards drag him away, and director Trevor orders her to leave for good. Jackson tries to learn Finley’s name, but Trevor won’t help because the pig chaos cost a day of production. The next day, Valerian and Saffron audition with Kale as their manager. Finley decides to go in disguise as a boy. Valerian and Saffron give a poor performance, and Trevor hires Saffron only for her looks. Finley, calling herself Huck, gets hired after reciting the Full House theme song. Valerian volunteers the farm as a filming location, which is accepted. Finley is disturbed when Saffron becomes attracted to her Huck guise and hits on him. Kale keeps trying to suck up to Jackson and become his manager. Jackson is cast as Billy the Kid, Saffron as a saloon girl, and Huck as an enemy in a fight scene. Finley has to change in and out of her disguise to do her chores, but the fight scene films perfectly. During a break, Jackson confides in Huck that he would give up acting to go back to his uncle’s ranch. When actor Kenny, cast as Saffron’s love interest, botches a rope trick that Huck does perfectly, Trevor decides to recast Kenny’s role with Huck. This horrifies Finley, because she is forced to kiss Saffron.
