Reader's Guide

Cruyff's move to Rotterdam was criticised and spurred Ajax on: Feyenoord lost 8-2 in Amsterdam, one of their heaviest defeats, but beat Ajax 4-1 at home and knocked them out of the Dutch Cup, then won the final against Fortuna Sittard. Gullit, in his second season at the club after arriving in 1982, played in an increasingly attacking midfield role with Wim van Hanegem as assistant manager and was named Dutch Footballer of the Year.
