In The Evil Dead (1981) a tape of an archaeologist reading from the Book of the Dead brings it back, and it possesses Ash's friends one by one. In Evil Dead II Annie Knowby reads passages that force it to take physical form and then open a time vortex to banish it. Professor Knowby's tape reveals it had possessed his wife Henrietta, whom he killed and buried in the cellar.
