Reader's Guide
In The Evil Dead (1981) Ash and four companions stay at a cabin in the woods, where a tape of Professor Knowby reading from a Sumerian Book of the Dead wakes the demon. The others are possessed and killed until Ash alone is left; he burns the book, but the film closes with the evil force rushing at him. Empire named Ash the 24th greatest movie character in 2008 and, in a 2013 vote, the greatest horror movie character ever.
