Greek football clubs in European competitions
Greek clubs have reached European quarter-finals 20 times.
Twenty Greek clubs have competed in European tournaments. Olympiacos debuted in the 1959–60 European Cup and hold the record for most appearances and matches. They are Greece’s only European trophy winner and the first club ever to claim both a senior and a youth European title in the same season, achieving this in 2023–24 with the UEFA Europa Conference League and UEFA Youth League.
Intertoto Cup / UEFA Intertoto Cup
Olympiacos withdrew from the Intertoto Cup for political reasons. Panathinaikos were involved in a replayed match after a penalty shoot-out was interrupted by the Soviet referee Valentin Lipatov, who declared CSKA Sofia winners; UEFA ordered the match replayed. A match involving Panathinaikos was interrupted in the 51st minute with Paris Saint-Germain leading 0–2 due to incidents in the stands, and Paris Saint-Germain were later awarded a 0–3 walkover. Iraklis received a bye. A match between PAOK and Maccabi Tel Aviv ended 2–1 to Maccabi Tel Aviv, but UEFA awarded a 3–0 walkover to Maccabi Tel Aviv because PAOK fielded an ineligible suspended player (Liassos Louka). PAOK were later reinstated to the play-off round after Metalist Kharkiv, who had eliminated PAOK, were excluded by UEFA for involvement in a match-fixing scandal in the 2007–08 season. Panionios were disqualified after the first leg due to fan riots. A Cagliari match was suspended after Cagliari's third goal because three Greek players refused to return to the pitch after being expelled by the police; UEFA validated the 3–0 score as definitive. In a tie where the away goal rule did not exist, a play-off game was played in Vienna, where Olympiacos won 2–0. Olympiacos also withdrew from the competition on another occasion.
