Full record
Clubs in bold won the respective season's competition. The UEFA Cup became the UEFA Europa League after 2008–09. The UEFA Europa Conference League was renamed the UEFA Conference League after 2023–24. The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (1955–1971) is recognised as the predecessor to the UEFA Cup but was not organised by UEFA, so UEFA does not consider its records part of European record. The tournament was founded in 1961–62 and taken over by UEFA in 1995.
Qualification to European competitions
Seven teams from Italy qualify for European competitions. The Serie A winners and clubs finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th qualify for the UEFA Champions League league phase. Two other teams, including the Coppa Italia winners, qualify for the UEFA Europa League. The club finishing 6th qualifies for the play-off round of the UEFA Conference League. If the Coppa Italia winner already qualified for the Champions League or Europa League, the 6th-placed club enters the Europa League league phase and the 7th enters the Conference League play-off round. For the 2024–25 season, Italy had five Champions League spots (1st to 5th) based on the extra-spot rule for the two leagues whose teams earn the most UEFA points.
Participation of Italian clubs in European competitions
The table shows the number of seasons Italian clubs participated in the three European seasonal cups, including the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. UCL denotes the UEFA Champions League (European Cup), CWC the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, UEL the UEFA Europa League (UEFA Cup), and UECL the UEFA Conference League. It includes competitions starting in September when group stages begin, not qualifying rounds. Azure indicates a Champions League group phase, pink a Europa League group phase, and green a Conference League group phase. Clubs with equal participations are sorted by seasons in the most important competition.
