Scottish football clubs in international competitions
Scottish clubs have won four UEFA trophies since 1955.
Scottish football clubs have participated in European competitions since 1955, when Hibernian entered the inaugural European Cup. Scottish sides have won four UEFA trophies: Celtic's 1966–67 European Cup, Rangers' 1972 Cup Winners' Cup, Aberdeen's 1983 Cup Winners' Cup, and Aberdeen's 1983 European Super Cup. The most recent Scottish final appearance was Rangers' loss on penalties in the 2022 UEFA Europa League final.
Did You Know?
- The only Scottish side to compete in the Intercontinental Cup was Celtic in 1967, following their European Cup win.
- In the 1967–68 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, Rangers were eliminated by eventual winners Leeds United, knowing Dundee would be their next opponent.
Finals
Scottish clubs have contested all three major European finals: twice in the European Cup, four times in the UEFA Cup or Europa League, and four times in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Six European finals not involving Scottish clubs have been held in Scotland, all at Hampden Park, and all were won by Spanish or German clubs. The 1960 European Cup final at Hampden drew 127,621 spectators, the highest attendance for a UEFA competition final, and saw Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7–3. Scottish teams eliminated at the semi-final stage in 1960 (Rangers) and 1966 (Celtic) each reached a different European final the following year. After a 26-year gap, Hampden hosted the 2002 Champions League final, followed by Celtic's 2003 UEFA Cup final appearance. The 2007 UEFA Cup final in Glasgow preceded Rangers' 2008 UEFA Cup final. After UEFA Euro 2020 matches at Hampden in 2021, Rangers reached the 2022 UEFA Europa League final.
Scottish Challenge Cup
The 2016–17 Scottish Challenge Cup added four non-Scottish league sides for the first time: two from the Welsh Premier League and two from Northern Ireland's NIFL Premiership, entering in the fourth round. Welsh champions The New Saints reached the semi-finals. The 2017–18 edition added two League of Ireland sides, with TNS and Crusaders both reaching the semi-finals.
