Hive Mind
Hive Mind, from Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game series.
The Hive Mind represents the collective consciousness of the Formic species, an insectoid alien race humanity originally dubbed "the buggers." The concept is central to the novel's tragedy: because the Formics possessed collective consciousness while humans did not, they assumed humanity was non-sentient before realizing their mistake too late. In the story, this mind is anchored by a Queen, whose survival or destruction dictates the fate of the species as a unified entity.

Lore & Background
When Andrew "Ender" Wiggin's fleet fired a Molecular Disruption Device at the bugger homeworld, the planet was destroyed and the surrounding bugger fleet was paralyzed; Ender had unknowingly committed xenocide. Their assumption that humanity lacked a collective consciousness led them to believe humans were non-sentient until it was too late. At the end of Ender's Game, Ender discovers a dormant queen egg on the colony world he governs and carries it away in search of a safe world for the species.
Reader's Guide
In Ender's Game, Ender learns from the queen that the Formics took humans for a non-sentient race and realized their mistake too late. The only way to restore the species was for Ender to carry a dormant queen egg to a new planet, allowing the Hive Mind to potentially reform in a safe location.
