Graff
The architect who isolated a child to save humanity.
Colonel Hyrum Graff is the commanding officer of Battle School within the International Fleet (I.F.), tasked with preparing Earth for an anticipated third invasion by the insectoid alien species known as 'buggers'. He recruits Andrew 'Ender' Wiggin after the six-year-old, whose monitoring device has just been removed, viciously retaliates against a school bully named Stilson. Graff visits Ender after hearing about the fight; Ender attests that by showing superiority now he has prevented future struggle, and Graff offers him a place in Battle School. His leadership style involves covertly working to keep Ender isolated from peers and family to forge an elite commander capable of surviving the psychological rigors of zero-gravity war games.

Lore & Background
Graff's relationship with Ender Wiggin is defined by deliberate manipulation and enforced solitude. Graff recruits Ender at age six, after the Stilson fight that followed the removal of Ender's monitor. Inside Battle School, Graff and other leaders systematically wear Ender down: promoting him to command new armies of untrained recruits, pitting them against multiple opponents simultaneously, and fostering jealousy among peers like Bonzo Madrid. This culminates in a fight outside the simulation in which Ender kills Bonzo; Ender is told that Bonzo was sent back to Earth, and it is only after the final battle that the death is revealed. At Command School, Ender's space combat simulations are created and controlled by Mazer Rackham.
Reader's Guide
Colonel Hyrum Graff runs Battle School for the International Fleet, which trains gifted children to become commanders. Isolation: Graff and the other leaders covertly work to keep Ender isolated. Deception: Ender is told that Bonzo Madrid was sent back to Earth when in fact Bonzo is dead, and the truth about the Command School battles is kept from him until the end. Promotion: to wear him down, Ender is given command of a new army of new recruits and then pitted against multiple armies at once.
Origins and Publication History
The character of Colonel Hyrum Graff first appeared in the short story 'Ender's Game', published by Orson Scott Card in the August 1977 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact. This narrative was later expanded into a full novel released on January 15, 1985. In 1991, Card released an updated version of the book, changing some political facts to account for the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. The story has since been translated into 34 languages. The novel calls the aliens 'buggers'; the film adaptation and the later novels call them 'Formics'.
The Battle School Curriculum
Under Graff's command, Battle School recruits children like Ender Wiggin to train as elite officers for the International Fleet. The curriculum centers on competitive war games played in zero gravity, where cadets must master military strategy and leadership. Graff visits Ender after his fight with Stilson, and Ender attests that showing superiority now prevents future struggle. To wear Ender down, he is promoted to command a new army of new recruits and then pitted against multiple armies at once. The training is designed to be increasingly difficult, wearing down the cadets psychologically. This culminates in Command School, where Ender trains under Mazer Rackham in space combat simulations that are in fact real battles directed via ansible.
The Final Simulation and Xenocide
The climax comes with Ender's final test at Command School, observed by the I.F.'s commanders. In a simulation against the bugger homeworld, Ender sacrifices his entire fleet to deploy a Molecular Disruption Device, destroying the planet and paralyzing the alien fleet. As commanders celebrate, Mazer Rackham reveals that these were not simulations but real battles. It is then revealed that both Stilson and Bonzo Madrid died from the injuries sustained at Ender's hands.
Legacy, Awards, and Adaptations
The novel featuring Colonel Graff won the 1985 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1986 Hugo Award. It has become suggested reading for military organizations such as the United States Marine Corps. In 2013, a film adaptation directed by Gavin Hood was released, with Asa Butterfield starring as Ender and Orson Scott Card co-producing. The story continues in sequels such as 'Speaker for the Dead' (1986) and in the parallel novel 'Ender's Shadow' (1999).
