Ender Wiggin
The Third who commanded the fleet that unknowingly destroyed an entire alien civilization.
Andrew "Ender" Wiggin is the central protagonist of Orson Scott Card's science fiction saga, originating in the 1985 novel Ender's Game. Born as a rare "Third" under strict population laws, he was recruited by the state to produce commanders for humanity's war against the Formics. Portrayed on screen by Asa Butterfield in the 2013 adaptation, Ender is the youngest of three children, protected by his sister Valentine and tormented by his sadistic brother Peter. His journey takes him from a school where he is bullied to Earth-orbiting Battle School, where he masters zero-gravity combat. He eventually commands Dragon Army, molding outcasts into champions. The narrative culminates in a devastating revelation: the final simulation was real war, resulting in the extermination of the Formic species and Ender's lifelong guilt as a xenocide.

Lore & Background
Ender's existence was specifically authorized to counter the Formics after two previous wars. At school, he faces severe bullying from Stilson, whom he beats so severely the boy dies later in a hospital; Ender learns of this death only much later. He is further tormented by his brother Peter, while Valentine remains his sole emotional anchor. Upon entering Battle School, Ender excels in academics and the zero-g Battle Room, eventually taking command of Dragon Army.
He transforms this group of unwanted students into the school's most successful unit. His success breeds jealousy among fellow commanders like Bonzo, who attempts to kill him in a shower; Ender kills Bonzo in self-defense without realizing it until later. Transferred directly to Command School on Eros, he trains under Mazer Rackham using holographic simulators. His classmates include Julian "Bean" Delphiki, Alai, Petra Arkanian, and Dink Meeker.
In the final battle, Ender realizes his fleet is facing overwhelming odds above a planet. He orders seemingly purposeless skirmishes to draw closer to the target, then deploys the Doctor Device to destroy the planet itself.
Reader's Guide
Andrew Wiggin serves as both a military commander and, later, a Speaker for the Dead. His primary skills lie in strategic brilliance, empathy, and leading under extreme psychological pressure. Key turning points include being accepted into Battle School despite bullying, forging Dragon Army from outcasts, killing Bonzo in self-defense, and commanding the fleet that destroyed the Formic homeworld. Post-war, Ender's guide to life shifts from warfare to understanding.
He uses his secret identity to speak for the dead, investigating deaths on Lusitania involving the piggies and human xenologers. He navigates complex relationships with Novinha's family, revealing that Marcos was abusive and that Miro is half-sibling to Ouanda. His journey involves managing the descolada virus, protecting the Formic Queen pupa, and maintaining peace between humans, piggies, and Formics while hiding his true identity from a galaxy that despises him as a xenocide.
