Ender's Game Codexery

Ender's Exile to Earth

A child commander too dangerous for any country, sent to govern a colony.

Ender's exile begins after the Formic war: the other Battle School children return to Earth, but Ender cannot, because there would be wars over which country would keep him for its own ends. The period is told in Ender in Exile (2008), which takes place between Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead.

Quick Facts

Character
Ender Wiggin

Lore & Background

Ender is offered the governorship of the first human colony planted on one of the buggers' former worlds, a planet later known as Shakespeare. His sister Valentine goes with him, and on the voyage she begins her History of the Bugger Wars while Ender has an unspoken power struggle with the ship's captain, Admiral Quincy Morgan. Once the ship lands, Ender takes charge of the colony and wins the colonists over.

Reader's Guide

Near the end of his years as governor, Ender and a boy named Abra look for a site for new colonists and come upon a structure made to look like a game Ender played at Battle School; inside is the living pupa of a Hive Queen. The find leads Ender to write The Hive Queen as the Speaker for the Dead, and later, at Peter's request, The Hegemon. He then resigns as governor and leaves with Valentine and the pupa for the colony of Ganges, governed by Virlomi.
