Mazer Rackham
The hero who stopped the Formic invasion and returned fifty years later to train Ender Wiggin.
Mazer Rackham is the hero of humanity's earlier war with the Formics. In the 2013 film he stops the Formic invasion by crashing his fighter jet into the Formic queenship, at the apparent cost of his life. In the novels he is the half-Māori captain who stopped the Second Invasion by realizing that the buggers are a hive mind, and who then spent fifty years at relativistic speeds, eight years for him, so that he could train the next commander. Ben Kingsley plays him in the film.
Lore & Background
In the film, Graff takes Ender to humanity's forward base on a former Formic planet near the Formic homeworld to meet Rackham, who explains that the Formics share a hive-mind mentality and how he exploited it to win. Ender's former squad members are there to help him train in simulations of large fleet combat, and Rackham puts special emphasis on the fleet's Molecular Detachment (MD) Device, which can disintegrate matter. In the novel, Ender meets Rackham at Command School, where Rackham creates and controls the space combat simulations and Ender's friends from Battle School join him as sub-commanders. After the final battle Rackham tells Ender that the simulations were real battles, directed by ansible, and that Ender has won the war.
Reader's Guide
Mazer Rackham links the earlier Formic invasion and the final confrontation. He is introduced to the audience through his legendary status as the man who destroyed the queenship by crashing his fighter jet into it. His role evolves from a mythic figure to an active mentor when he meets Ender at the forward base. He provides critical exposition on the Formic hive-mind, explaining that their collective consciousness was the key to their defeat in the past.
Rackham's primary function is to prepare Ender for command of the fleet, specifically focusing on the use of the Molecular Detachment (MD) Device. This weapon is described as capable of disintegrating matter and becomes central to the final test. He facilitates the transition from simulation to reality, allowing Ender to believe he is playing a game while actually commanding a live fleet. His guidance ensures that Ender understands the stakes and the mechanics of total war, culminating in the destruction of the Formic homeworld.
