Plot summary
In 2197, all Battle School graduates except Ender come back to Earth. Ender's brother Peter, writing as Locke, tries to bring Ender home, but Valentine, using the pseudonym Demosthenes, blocks this by citing Peter's violent history. Members of Ender's former unit, the Jeesh, are kidnapped by Achilles de Flandres, who wants them as strategists for global conquest; Bean escapes. Bean works with Sister Carlotta to free the captives after decoding a message from Petra that reveals Russian support for Achilles.
Peter publishes evidence of Achilles' murders, leading to the release of most prisoners, but Achilles takes Petra to India. There he demands invasion plans for Burma and Thailand, which Indian Battle School graduates devise. Petra instead proposes stripping India's border garrisons, a plan she expects will not be executed, until Achilles brokers peace between India and Pakistan and secretly lets China destroy the Indian army.
History
Card credited two books as particularly influential: Thailand: A Short History by David K. Wyatt and Raj: The Making and Unmaking of British India by Lawrence James. At publication, Card expected the Bean series to span only four volumes.
